Portrait of Madeleine Gerber

Madeleine was on her own at age nine after the deportation of her mother to Auschwitz
M adeleine Gerber was a hidden child in France during World War II. She was born in Paris to parents of Hungarian decent. Madeleine was on her own at age nine after the deportation of her mother to Auschwitz. She spent two painful years with a family of farmers who, according to Mme Gerber, took her in for the money they received and then mistreated her. Constantly frightened, she received little food and frequent beatings. She spent three years in a home for orphaned children after the War, came to the United States in 1957 and settled in Philadelphia.
